We Need Your Input!

February 16, 2022

Dear CKE Resident
WE NEED YOUR INPUT
RE: Important Community Survey / Heritage Local Area Plan
Your Community Association is conducting a survey to gather your opinions about how our communities will continue to grow and evolve in the coming years. Feedback you provide will help leaders of the CKE Community Association better represent community views when working with The City of Calgary on the Heritage Local Area Plan. The goal is to understand the concerns, expectations and needs of our community.
All responses are completely confidential and are being collected by a professional research firm.
The survey will take 5 to 8 minutes to complete.
As a thank you for your time, we will enter your name for a draw to win one of three gift certificates for $100 from
Empire Provisions, Cobbs Bread Bakery and Bitter Sisters.
The Heritage LAP has in progress since 2019 and is now scheduled to be considered for approval by City Council in the Fall of 2022.  Once approved, this Plan will determine what type of housing forms will be permitted in our communities. In addition to completing the survey, it is important for you to get involved and let the City know where you stand.  Watch for future opportunities to be heard.
You can find out more about the project at: https://engage.calgary.ca/Heritage
If you have any questions or comments, contact Guy Buchanan the volunteer Planning Director for the CKE Community Association at: Guy@Co-Star.ca
Thank you

2021 Builder’s Award: Dawn Messer & Dan Kennelly

September 1, 2021

Dawn Messer has been a board member for the CKE Community association for nearly 10 years, and in that time she has been the driving force behind so much of what makes our community outstanding. Not only was she instrumental in getting our hall built, but she has also been a trailblazer in clearing the path and showing the way for all of us on projects like our major social events of the year, our playground space, and our most significant fundraisers. Most recently, she has been the VP on our board and the power behind getting all of the last projects in our hall completed – from sound baffling and donor walls to basketball hoops and emergency repairs on the bold sign, we have Dawn to thank for everything. Dawn has served as a leader in our community, a mentor to our board members and a guiding light to all of our CKE neighbours as we strive towards creating a vibrant, connected and active community. Congratulations Dawn!

Dan Kennelly has also served as a board member for many years, in a variety of director roles. After stepping down from the board last year, Dan has continued to work daily on supporting the infrastructure of our community space in ways both large and small. I think it is safe to say, though I know he would never say it himself, that without Dan we would not have the rinks, the hall facility, the upgrades post construction, the rinks, or any of the smooth operating procedures that we’re able to enjoy today. Dan is always available to serve his community with his incredible insight and ability to solve even the most complex problems (from collapsing retaining walls to busted mailboxes), and we’ve been so lucky to have him as a leader supporting the CKE board and the CKE community association through the years.

2020 CKE Community Builder Award

October 19, 2020

Each year, at our AGM, the community association recognizes an individual or group who consistently participates in making our community a great place to live.

We are lucky to live in a community with so many volunteers willing to take roles of responsibility in our CA. This year the board selected Chris Doyle as the recipient of the award.

Chris joined the board in 2012 as Traffic director and quickly worked up the ranks to Vice President and on be President from 2014-2016. He is retiring and rounding out is 8 years with the board as the Secretary.

During these 8 years he met the challenges and the growing pains of the old hall while the fundraising began to build the new one.
Always game to participate and support the fundraising ideas he was game to play Marty McFly for the Back to the Future themed Wine and Whiskey, ride a tricycle in one of the videos that went viral in the neighbourhood and even step up to play dunk the president at the yearly fall BBQ in the water dunk tank.

These were more of the fun moments during his reign…some of the more contentious and less than fun moments were the BRT project, the Bantrel threat and the challenging hall build. All of which he met with integrity and with the best interest of the community in mind.

Chris has spent hours and hours volunteering on CKE projects and all to the benefit of the community. He took each role he had on the board seriously and was committed to them. Board members always went to him to get answers, guidance and governance as he is such a strong leader and has the ability to look at a situation from all sides and with great clarity.

Under Chris’ stewardship and in the 8 years of him being on the board, a few success to be mentioned are:
~ Approved and voted in the skate spot
~ Upgraded the rink rat tractor
~ Raised 2 Million dollars to build a new hall
~ Building the new hall and the lifecycle of that project
~ Rebuild the garden
~ Replaced the tennis courts

A big thank you to Chris for his years devoted to CKE and for his dedication to bettering the community.
You leave behind a legacy of work you should be proud of and one that the community is very grateful and appreciate of.

If you see them in the community be sure to congratulate our 2020 CKE Community Builder Award winner!
